Update Glitch Forces BitLocker Recovery
Microsoft has issued a warning regarding its recent October 2025 security updates for Windows, which may cause some systems to unexpectedly boot into BitLocker recovery mode. BitLocker, a core Windows security feature, encrypts drives to protect data from theft. This recovery mode typically engages after significant hardware or firmware changes, but the latest updates are triggering it erroneously.
According to a service alert from Microsoft, the issue occurs after a restart following the installation of updates released on or after October 14, 2025. When affected, users are prompted to enter their BitLocker recovery key. Fortunately, Microsoft states that after the key is entered once, the device should restart and boot normally without further prompts.
Affected Systems and Mitigation
The bug primarily impacts devices with Intel processors that support the Modern Standby feature, which allows PCs to stay connected to a network in a low-power state. The specific Windows versions affected by this known issue include Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, as well as Windows 10 22H2.
For IT administrators managing multiple devices, Microsoft has provided a mitigation path through a group policy delivered via Known Issue Rollback (KIR). However, organizations must contact Microsoft Support for business to get more details on implementing this fix. This is not the first time users have faced this problem; similar BitLocker recovery issues were reported after updates in May of this year, August of last year, and August 2022, indicating a recurring challenge with Windows security updates.
