Gaming Host Hit by 6Tbps DDoS Attack, One of the Largest Ever Recorded
Advertisements

In a significant cybersecurity event in early 2024, network security company Gcore successfully mitigated a massive Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack targeting a gaming hosting provider. The assault on the provider, named EternalHOST, reached a peak of 6 Terabits per second (Tbps), placing it among the top 10 largest DDoS attacks ever recorded.

The attack was reported by Gcore researchers, whose infrastructure absorbed the immense traffic surge. Despite the record-breaking volume of malicious data, the targeted services for the gaming host remained available throughout the incident.

Attack Details and Mitigation

The assault was identified as a UDP flood attack, a common method for overwhelming a target’s resources. The attack’s duration was two minutes, during which it peaked at 6Tbps and reached a rate of 400 Million packets per second (Mpps). Gcore’s analysis noted that the attack was a simple UDP flood, executed by a botnet without the use of amplification or reflection techniques. The security firm’s distributed network and mitigation systems were able to handle the onslaught, preventing any service disruption for the client.

A New Benchmark in DDoS Assaults

The 6Tbps attack represents a substantial escalation in the scale of DDoS threats observed by Gcore, being double the size of a previous 3Tbps attack the firm had reported. For context, this event is comparable in magnitude to other major historical attacks, such as the 3.47 Tbps attack mitigated by Microsoft. The successful defense against such a high-volume attack underscores the capabilities required to protect against modern cyber threats that continue to grow in size and intensity.
