Windows 11 Canary Channel Gets New Copilot Integration

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7051 to the Canary Channel. This update, part of the development cycle for Windows 11 version 24H2, introduces a new feature designed to integrate the Copilot AI assistant more deeply into the operating system’s file management. The build also includes a notable bug fix and addresses known issues from previous releases.

The primary addition in this build is the ‘Ask Copilot’ feature. This function allows users to directly send files to the Copilot in Windows sidebar for analysis or processing. To use it, a user can right-click on a file within File Explorer, and a new ‘Ask Copilot’ option will appear in the context menu. This feature is currently compatible with all text-based file types.

Feature Details and System Fixes

When the ‘Ask Copilot’ option is selected for a supported file, the Copilot sidebar opens with a prompt asking, “What would you like to do with this file?” This enables users to perform actions such as summarizing the document, explaining its contents, or translating the text without manually copying and pasting the information into the chat interface. The feature streamlines the workflow for interacting with documents using the built-in AI assistant.

In addition to the new feature, Build 26220.7051 contains a significant fix for a bug that caused the taskbar to become unresponsive. This issue previously occurred after a user interacted with the flyout for the network icon while on the lock screen. Microsoft also noted existing known issues, including a problem that prevents some Windows Insiders from using Prism .NET in the .NET Framework on this build.
