Windows 11 to Prompt for Memory Scans After BSOD Crashes

Microsoft Tests New Diagnostic Feature

Microsoft is introducing a new feature in Windows 11 designed to help users troubleshoot system instability. In the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26236, released to the Canary Channel, the operating system now prompts users to perform a memory scan following a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) crash. This change makes an existing diagnostic tool more accessible to everyday users who experience critical system failures.

The feature works by displaying a notification after the system reboots from a stop error. The alert suggests, “There may be an issue with your PC’s memory,” and provides a direct option to “Run memory diagnostics to try and fix it.” Clicking this prompt launches the native Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, which can identify hardware-related memory problems that frequently cause system crashes.

Simplifying BSOD Troubleshooting

BSOD events, also known as stop errors, occur when Windows encounters a problem it cannot recover from, forcing a system shutdown. While the causes are varied, faulty or failing Random Access Memory (RAM) is a common hardware culprit. Many users are often unaware of the built-in tools available to diagnose such issues. By proactively suggesting a memory scan, Microsoft aims to streamline the troubleshooting process for one of the most frustrating computer problems.

To perform its checks, the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool requires a system restart. It then runs a series of tests on the computer’s RAM before the full operating system loads, checking for errors that could lead to instability. This new notification system is currently in the testing phase and is available only to participants in the Windows Insider Canary Channel.
