Meta Launches New Anti-Scam Features for WhatsApp and Messenger

Meta has rolled out significant new tools to protect its WhatsApp and Messenger users from potential scams. On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the company announced these enhancements, focusing on bolstering user security against various deceptive tactics in the realm of cryptocurrency and encryption-related threats.

WhatsApp Introduces Screen Sharing Warnings

For WhatsApp users, Meta is introducing new warnings designed to prevent the inadvertent sharing of sensitive personal data. These alerts activate specifically when users attempt to share their screen with an unknown contact during a video call. The primary goal of these warnings is to stop users from inadvertently revealing critical information such as bank details or verification codes to malicious actors.

Messenger Gains On-Device Scam Detection

Messenger users now have access to an opt-in setting called “Scam detection.” Users can enable this feature by navigating to their Privacy & safety settings within the application. Once activated, this tool alerts users when they receive a potentially suspicious message from an unknown connection, identifying messages that may contain signs of a scam.

Meta explicitly stated that “Because detection happens on your device, chats with end-to-end encryption stay secure” when referring to Messenger’s new scam detection. If a user is notified that a chat may contain signs of a scam, the system will ask if they would like to send recent messages received to AI review. Messages that are shared with AI for review are no longer end-to-end encrypted, as noted by Meta in a support document.

These new features underscore Meta’s ongoing efforts to enhance the security posture of its widely used communication platforms, providing concrete tools to help users identify and avoid fraudulent schemes and protect sensitive information.
